My Nephew got his first Duck (s) today!!!!!! :D Very nice mallard and 2 woodys! I asked him if he wanted to mount the mallard and he does want to. I'm not sure how to prepare it for the taxidermist. I read a few things online (it's 8:30 pm and I there isn't anyone around now!) I wrapped it in a damp towel and stuck the head under the wing, then I put it in 2 plastic bags and put it in the freezer.... I hope I didn't ruin it!!! Very proud of him! He just turned 14 on Monday!!!! :D

Usually it is more advisable to take the duck, put it bill first into and old panty hose so that the feathers are pressed down toward the rear of the duck. You can cut the nylons at both ends of the leg to form a tube. Reach through the tube and pull the duck into the nylon tube. Hope I am being clear. You can then freeze it. The biggest point is to get it to a taxadermist in reasonable time. It will keep the skin in better shape. Rick

Congratulations! Great job.

I think you did ok with the duck, but yes, get it to a taxidermist as soon as possible.

I've seen some pretty poorly treated birds made nearly perfect again. And sounds like you've done a good job of preserving it.

I believe the most important part of preserving the bird is in the field, where it can be exposed to all kinds of damage. I bring a bread bag, and a pair of nylons with me just in case I get a really nice bird.

Congratulations again. Great hunt.

Congrats to your nephew for sure! Nicely done! When I prepare a bird for the taxidermist I put the bird in a knee high nylon stocking, wrap that in newspaper and then put in the freezer as soon as I can. Keeps the feathers from getting all ruffled up.

Thank you all very much! Will have to make sure they have stockings next time!!! I did get it to the taxidermist 2 days after he shot it and he said it would be fine! Must say that the other ducks they got were mighty tasty! :D I did a stir-fry with it and much to my suprise the boys loved it!!!! They used to be such fussy eaters when they were younger! :)
