First shots of the year

This weekend has been the youth waterfowl weekend here in Michigan. Our main season does not open for another 2 weeks but they set this weekend aside for those 10-15 to hunt with a parent or mentor that is 21 or older. I have a good friend of many years whose boy loves to come "up north" and hunt and fish with me. He does quite a bit of fishing and hunting with his dad but his dad has to work most weekends and has not gotten into the waterfowl or the salmon so he loves to come to our place. He is a good kid and is always well behaved. He also does quite nicely with his gun handling and listens well when I give him instructions. We went out and on Saturday morning he was able to harvest his very first ducks. He hunted last year with several shots but could not get the hang of hitting them. I think you will see he had some good company.

Of course, Chelsea has had it forever and loves to show she still has it.

I was able to take both Chelsea and Katie with us and they were able to retrieve one duck each. It was an awsome trip and a lot of fun. Nothing like seeing good dogs work together and learn and to see a new fan of waterfowl hunting start to bud.

Congrats on the trip! We also have a youth weekend which happened to be this past weekend. Can't wait for our season to open up in 2 weeks!

Great pictures Rick, the dogs look just as happy as your young hunting partner. Getting young people involved is the future of the sport. ;)
