I do not hunt sea ducks on a regular basis but have hunted in Maryland & New Jersey for them using guides. these guides used 4 or 5 strings of (15 to 20) dekes consisting of the most seen type of ducks. all the strings were inside gun range & the boat was not camouflaged in any way. from talking to these guides, sea ducks will decoy 1 day & ignore the spread the next. weather does not seem to make a difference in their coming into the spread. after hunting like this with different guides I agree with their comments.
2 identical days of weather, for a day & a half the ducks came in like ants to sugar. the last half of the 1st day, the ducks would not come anywhere near us. hope this helps.........
I've never sea duck hunted but do hunt Saginaw Bay for divers. We use several long lines of 12-15 decoys and sometimes flag and call. Can't say the flagging or calling make much difference. It seems like they are either going to decoy or not.

Yeah some of the old time hunters told me they will come right into your decoy, they never called or flag.

The worst question is the one not asked. So I'm gonna ask it. I've never hunted Sea Ducks, though I've duck hunted for over 20 years.
What exactly do you mean by 'flaging'?

well it's just a black and white flag that you wave around and the ducks think it's other ducks. Most sea ducks around here are black and white. they shacke a lot to get red of the water on them. I guess it's just ading movement to your decoys.

Kind of like flagging for snows or canuks? From what iv seen on Seas ducks is alot of people use one of those one person flat bottom boats that are painted blue on top to match the water and have another boat with the people and gear in the bigger boat out aways and you take turns in the little flat bottom. Those ducks seem to come in low and fast and tough as nails. Best of luck..if you get a chance take some pics as I would like to see some.
