I got a great early birthday present this morning( tomorrow's my B-day). I hunted a freshly harvested oat field this morning and had a group of 8 birds glide in at 7:45 am. I took the front bird with the first shot and then 2 others flared up right in front of me. Shot # 2 dropped one of them and I swung and clipped the other. My lab Mac was out of the X-land'r and on the first bird as it hit right in front of the blind. The third bird was half running/half flying toward a huge overgrown swamp so I had Mac drop the bird he was on and sent him after the cripple. He ran it down after about 75 yards and as he was bringing it back I told him it better be banded. As he got closer I could see it was! :D I sent Mac to retrieve the second bird and again said it better be banded. Hey it worked the first time. You guessed it! A triple out of a flock with 2 bands 28 numbers apart! Happy Birthday to me! I'll post some pictures later.

Researchers doing population/migration studies will capture ducks/geese and put an aluminum band with identifying numbers on it. When you kill a banded bird you report it and they can track the birds movements. A small percentage of birds are banded so they are kind of a waterfowling trophy. Some bands are worth money when reported. They feel this helps the reporting rate. They also used to put numbered, bright colored plastic collars on the necks of some geese so they could be seen at a distance and reported while still alive. However this became essentially a death sentence for the goose as they were more likely targeted by hunters or poachers.
