I have a Remington 870 Express 12 guage 28" barrel
a Traditions Fausti Stephano 12 guage O/U 28" barrels
a Tradtions O/U Combo 20 guage barrels 26" barrels
.410 26" barrels
The lenght of the barrels in general will effect the smoothness of the swing of the firearm. The longer barreled guns are heavier and swing much smoother through the targets. That said there is something to be said for a shorter lighter barrel in the woods and when walking in the field. They come up faster and are generally faster on the target.
Most competative trap, skeet and sporting clay shooters use a 30" or a 32" barrels on their guns.
I personally prefer the shorter 26" barrels in the grouse and woodcock woods and the 28" barrel guns in the duck and goose blinds or in the open fields.
I think it all comes down to what you get used to and what you are comfortable with and what gun you can afford.

Remington 870 3 1/2" Magnum 12 ga. and I think it's a 28 inch barrell. I don't know. I wanted a Remington 870 because that is what we use mostly in the UKC Hunt Tests. I can shuck the shells pretty fast.

I would've said exactly what Maverick Brittany just said a couple posts back....scary. I like swinging a faster(lighter) gun after grouse & woodcock, so I'll use my Browning 20 gauge in the thick stuff with a 26" barrel. I throw my 12 gauges at most eveything else in 28". A lot of gun makers make "micros" for younger hunters and women with 24" barrels, and some guys will bring those into the thick stuff also.

One thing to keep in mind is that with an O/U or side by side, you are eliminating approximately 6" of receiver. So with a 28" barrel, you are still at least 2" shorter than a gun with a receiver (ie pumps, autos) that has a 28" barrel.

Depends on what I am shooting. I shoot mostly side by sides and overunders. Too short of barrells actually hurts your swing on any pass shots.
Gun fit is far more important than anything else. Factory guns are designed to cover averages. Averages are dangerous because if you are sitting in your living room with one hand in a roaring fire and the other in a bucket of ice water --- on average you should be comfortable :) . If you want to dramatically improve your shooting, have a gun fitting and then look for guns that have the correct measurements or have one fitted for you ( bring your checkbook!!! ). I have friends who have commented that they had a lot of guns but they only shot a couple of them really well. Sure enough, the guns they shoot well are closer to the measurements that fit them better. REMEMBER: An Instructor does not a Gun Fitter make; Conversely, a Gun Fitter does not an Instructor make. Search for a firm which is qualified in both fields, so that you will not waste your money. Here is a link to a firm that has a wide variety of "try guns" and the ability to professionaly fit guns. http://www.woodcockhill.com/trygun.html They also have GSPs. Their are other fitters here in the US as well. Do your due dillegence if you decide to have a gun fitting! I have seen people spend thousands and thousands of dollars on dogs, training, leases, guides, clothes, vehicles and etc. and then shoot $2.93 a box shells from walmart that contain shot that isn't round out of a gun that they don't even realize is costing them 20%, 30%, or maybe even more of their possible shots connecting with their possible targets. Some people are lucky and find a factory gun that is close enough to their measurements that they seem to work. Most shooters never know what they are missing out on.

I agree about the swing and all that stuff. I shoot a Ruger Red Label 20 gauge, with 30 inch barrels. (Sporting Clays Model) I had several 26 inch barrel guns and sold them all WHY, Because after 30 yards I could not kill a bird, with the 26 inchers. Since going to the 30 inch I kill nicely up to 45 yards. I must add using the same shells I did in the 26 inch gun.
